How to Put iPhone/iPad/iPod into DFU Mode

Entering DFU mode is a means to getting your iOS device to interface with iTunes. When your device is in DFU mode, the device screen will be totally black. DFU mode can be used in different situations including upgrading firmware, downgrading firmware, and even rebooting your tethered jailbroken device. It could fix a lot of problems like iDevice stuck in the silver Apple logo, your device gets stuck in a continuous restart loop.

Now I will take iPhone as an example to introduce how to get into and get out of DFU mode, and provide three different methods for data recovery.

Part 1: How to Enter DFU Mode

Tutorial 1: How to Enter DFU Mode with iTunes
Step 1. Run iTunes on your computer and plug your iPhone into computer with a USB cable.
Step 2. Power off your device.
Step 3. Press the “Power” and “Home” button simultaneously for 10 seconds.
Step 4. Release the “Power” button but keep on pressing the “Home” one for another 10 seconds.
Step 5. When you get a pop-up window shown as below, you can release your finger pressing on the “Home” button.

Tutorial 2: How to Enter DFU Mode without iTunes
Without iTunes, you can also enter DFU mode with iPhone Data Recovery. Download the free trial version below first.



Launch the program on your computer and connect your device. Then go to the "Advanced Mode" and you’ll see the window as below.

Get Your iPhone into DFU Mode

Now, follow the steps to enter DFU mode.
Step 1. Click the “Start” button in green on your device.
Step 2. After that, press the “Power” and “Home” button at the same time for 10 seconds.
Step 3. Release the “Power” button but keep on pressing the “Home” button for another 10 seconds when 10 seconds passed.
Step 4. You can release the “Home” button once you get the information that you have entered the DFU mode successfully.
Note: If your iPhone screen is completely black, it means that your device has entered DFU mode successfully.

Part 2: How to Exit DFU Mode

To get your iPhone out of DFU mode, just press the “Power” and “Home” button together for 10 seconds. Once you see the Apple logo on your device, you can release them.

Part 3: How to Recover iPhone Lost Data in DFU Mode

Step 1. Connect Your iDevice to Computer and Scan
Launch iPhone Data Recovery and connect your iPhone to computer. Click "Start Scan".

For iPhone 4/3GS users, please choose "Advanced Mode" firstly, and then click "Start Scan" to scan your device.

Step 2. Recover Lost Data in DFU Mode
After scanning, all lost data will be listed and you can preview them in details, tick the items you want and click "Recover" button.

Part 4: How to Extract iPhone Data from iTunes Backup

Step 1. Find iTunes Backup and Scan
Turn to "Recover from iTunes Backup File" mode, pick the latest one and scan.

Exit iPhone DFU Mode

Step 2. Retrieve Lost Files from iTunes Backup
Choose the items you need and click "Recover" button.

Part 5: How to Download iPhone Data from iCloud Backup

Step 1. Sign in iCloud Account and Download Backup
Switch to the third mode "Recover from iCloud Backup File" and input your Apple ID and password, choose the latest backup and click "Download".

Get into DFU Mode

Step 2. Export Data from iCloud Backup
After downloaded, choose the files you need and click "Recover" button.
